“I wish I had known about chiropractic care during my first pregnancy. I think some women may be intimidated about going to see a chiropractor during pregnancy, but it was one of the best prenatal decisions I made, not only for the health of my body but for the health of my unborn child as well.”

When Christine first found Connection Cafe Chiropractic she was experiencing some discomfort in her right lower back for a few weeks, and it was not going away. She was in her first trimester of pregnancy and knew this pain and discomfort was not normal.

“After unsuccessfully being treated by a different chiropractor, I came to Connection Cafe Chiropractic after reading positive reviews about their prenatal care. Within a few weeks of regular 3x weekly adjustments, the weird feeling in my lower back disappeared. I wanted to continue seeing Drs. Morgan and Derrell during my pregnancy because I knew that they could help maintain proper alignment of my spine, which would help my body to adapt better as my pregnancy moved along.”

During her first pregnancy five years ago, Christine suffered from painful joints and swelling. Her delivery was long and she had to get an epidural for the pain. Her daughter was born four weeks before her estimated due date so they were in the hospital for several days afterwards before being discharged. The first time around she knew nothing about chiropractic care and that it was an option to help her body during pregnancy.

“I am glad I made the decision to receive chiropractic care during my pregnancy with my son because it definitely helped to minimize my body aches so that on the day of his birth, I was able to deliver him quickly and naturally. I especially loved their belly pillow, which allowed me to comfortably be adjusted while lying down on my stomach. In addition, both chiropractors are so friendly and personable. I enjoyed chatting with them about my pregnancy progression and hearing their feedback. I always left their office feeling good after my prenatal adjustments.”

Christine made it a priority to receive consistent chiropractic care throughout all of her pregnancy. Even with her busy schedule being a nurse and a mom to a five year old, she knew she wanted to have as good of a birthing experience as possible. With each visit, Dr. Derrell and Dr. Morgan were able to make sure her pelvis was balanced, her spine was aligned and moving and that her muscles and ligaments were adapting to her growing belly.

“My body definitely responded well to the adjustments, which were very gentle and pain-free. As a nurse working long shifts at a county hospital, I was able to work until 3 weeks before giving birth and I credit my body's physical ability to get through tough 12 hour shifts with minimal aches due to the fact that I was receiving chiropractic care. In fact, while many of my non-pregnant nurse co-workers were complaining of back and neck pain, I had little to none during my pregnancy and I am continuing to receive care during postpartum. I would absolutely recommend chiropractic care during pregnancy! Going through pregnancy can cause a woman’s body to go through so many changes that can cause major physical discomfort doing even simple tasks. Thankfully, because I received chiropractic care throughout my second pregnancy, I did not experience the level of physical discomfort in my joints and muscles as I did when I was pregnant with my first child.”

Christine was very in tune with her body throughout this pregnancy. It was amazing to see her body shift and adapt so smoothly to her growing baby. In fact, her body was functioning and feeling better in her third trimester of pregnancy than it was when she first came in early on with low back pain. When it came time for delivery, Christine's pelvis was balanced and her body was communicating as efficiently as possible.

“Baby C was not due until December 23 but on the morning of December 11 at around 5:30 am, I started feeling contractions. They were about 7-8 minutes apart so I knew that I was still in the early stages of labor. I laid in bed excitedly thinking that this would be the day our son would be born. I woke my husband up shortly thereafter and we proceeded to get our 5-year-old daughter ready for school. My husband took our daughter to school and I called the hospital labor and delivery unit to describe my symptoms. I was advised to come in and be evaluated. So at around 10 a.m. we arrived at the hospital and were quickly escorted into a triage examination room. The midwife examined me and informed me I was already 5 cm dilated. Though my contractions were still about 5-6 minutes apart at this time, I knew the baby would be coming soon, probably before evening. I was asked if I wanted an epidural and I briefly thought about the prospect of having numbing relief from the contractions. With my first pregnancy I did have an epidural but its effects subsided and I still ended up feeling the pain of the quickening contractions during transition. So I ended up declining pain medication and the epidural this time around because I felt confident that my body would be able to handle the labor and because I didn’t want any possible postpartum complications from getting an epidural. I labored for several hours more until I was moved into the delivery room at about 2 p.m. The midwife checked my cervix shortly later and announced I was 10 cm dilated. By this time, the pain of the contractions was so severe that that I was gripping anything within reach to transfer some of the excruciating pain away. I started pushing around 2:40 p.m. and at 3:12 p.m. baby C arrived, weighing 7 pounds, 1 oz.  He was healthy and adjusting well to life outside the womb so we were discharged from the hospital the following day. My body also rebounded quickly; less than a week after giving birth to him, I returned to Connection Café Chiropractic to share the news about C’s birth and receive my first postpartum adjustment."
